Nearly every woodworking task involves joining two pieces of wood. There are countless ways of doing this, but the most effective and affordable way is to find the best pocket hole jig which will allow you to create pocket hole joints. The most popular pocket hole jig available comes from the brand Kreg.

Kregg offers a wide variety of pocket hole jig types from expensive to very cheap. This guide will help you decide which one to buy.

Why Pocket Hole Joints?

For the DIYer, using pocket screw joinery is the best option as they create robust bonds simply and at a low cost without expensive woodworking tools.

Other methods, like biscuits, half lap joints, and dowels usually require special tools that can be expensive and time consuming to use. Unless you are a full time carpenter, you will get the best results with the best pocket hole jig you can find. Most DIYers just like to building things every once in awhile, and it is a waste of money to buy tools which will collect dust. The only thing you need to create a strong pocket joint are butt joints. These are easy to cut even on tighter budgets. With perfectly square cut joints, you will get the strongest joints.

Another great bonus when using one of the best pocket hole jigs is the lack of need for clamps. Thankfully, the screws will hold your pieces just fine without the help of expensive external clamps. Without one of these jigs, you will likely end up using more clamps than you can afford.

How Strong Are Pocket Hole Joints?

After testing some of the best pocket hole jigs on the market, we found that they gave us some pretty strong bonds. To give these joints a good testing, we created some panel carriers to move some heavy pieces of plywood and drywall (100+ pounds). Over 2,000 pounds of material was transported this way, and the joints never posed a problem. Since then, we have used pocket hole joints for various other builds too ranging from desks to cabinets.

If you already own any other Kreg jig kits, you can purchase the mini kit without any of the accessories to save you some money.

Accessories included with the Mini Kreg Jig Kit include a specially designed drill bit that lets you create the pocket hole and hole in a single step. With this special bit, you also get a stop collar and a 4mm hex key to adjust the collar.

When this Mini Kreg Jig Kit is compared to their full-sized kits, this jig makes the same pocket holes. If you are looking for the best pocket hole jig for a beginner, it doesn’t get better than this. With this tool you can accomplish most tasks with ease.

When we think about it, the Kreg Jr. Pocket Hole Jig is the better jig compared to the Kreg Mini when it comes to getting the best bang for your buck. The Kreng Jr. Jig offers every accessory you will every need and is offered at only a slightly higher price point.

This jig is much faster than the Kreg Mini because it includes built-in guides which are easily adjusted to the thickness of your material.

Although this jig is faster than the mini version in every way, it is still very clumsy when you have to constantly re-adjust the stop collar for different sizes of materials. Having to stop and adjust the collar with a tape measure to accommodate for a different material size can become a tedious process.

When using the Kreg Mini, we would constantly need to un-clamp the jig, move it to the side, re-position it with spacers, clamp it down again, and drill for each piece. However, when using the Kreg Jr., you can simply slide the jig over without having to waste time realigning it. When you are trying to make dozens of holes quickly, this extra time makes a huge difference. Uisng a plastic insert, you can easily attach a clamp to the jig to make re-positioning even easier.

This kit offers some additional features you won’t find in any of their other kits. These include a portable base, face clamp. 6-inch square driver, and a material support stop. These extra features come in handy, so this is a great bang for your buck.

Both the K4 and the K4MS offer greater durability than the other jigs. Thanks to a stationary drill guide, you won’t get any points of pressure placed on the plastic drill guide. The Kreg Mini has this issue, and after extensive use, it develops small dents. Luckily, this doesn’t impact the tool’s usability.

If you are someone who makes pocket holes frequently, you shouldn’t settle for less than the best pocket hole jig. With the Kreg K4 Jig, you can easily save yourself plenty of time. Simply slide your material into place and clamp it down with one hand. This jig offers a dust collection port to keep your work space clean.
